Lemonade is seeking an 8.6% rate increase for its Massachusetts pet insurance business, but the filing also reveals that its policy count in the state has declined.
The insurer reported 16,508 affected policyholders and $14 million in written premium in its latest filing, down from 17,154 policyholders and $11.4 million in premium disclosed in a September 2025 filing. The figures suggest that Lemonade’s Massachusetts pet insurance book has lost around 646 policies, or nearly 4%, over the past eight months, even as premium volume increased.
The latest filing represents a closed block of business and calls for a 10% indicated increase for Accident & Illness coverage, while rates for Preventative coverage would remain unchanged. Lemonade estimates the filing would generate an additional $1.2 million in written premium.
The combination of fewer policies and higher premium is notable. It suggests that average premium per policy has increased materially, whether through prior rate actions, changes in business mix, or policyholder retention skewing toward higher-value accounts.
The filing was placed on file by Massachusetts regulators on May 18 and becomes effective for renewals on September 18, 2026.
