Metromile Insurance Company, part of Lemonade, filed to introduce pet insurance for cats and dogs in Idaho.
The filing was submitted on July 8, with a requested effective date of November 18, 2026. It remains pending regulatory review.
The accident and illness product will provide optional coverage for veterinary visit fees, physical therapy, preventive care and dental care in exchange for additional premium. Other optional benefits include behavioral treatment and end-of-life expenses such as euthanasia, cremation and memorial items.
The dental benefit can cover treatment and cleanings for dental illnesses, including pre-existing conditions. Preventive care options may cover wellness exams, vaccines, testing, microchipping, spaying or neutering, parasite medication and other routine services.
The base policy excludes uncured pre-existing conditions and includes a 14-day waiting period for illnesses and a 30-day waiting period for orthopedic conditions unrelated to an accident. Customers may request to waive the remaining waiting periods after completing a veterinary exam.
Metromile said it developed the policy internally with legal experts and veterinary specialists. The insurer is using experience from Westchester Fire Insurance Company’s Idaho pet insurance program to support its entry into the state.
