Lemonade Seeks 19.5% Florida Pet Insurance Rate Increase

Lemonade is seeking an overall 19.5% rate increase for its Florida pet insurance program, affecting approximately 37,350 policies representing $22.7 million in written premium.

The filing proposes a 23% increase for accident and illness coverage, while rates for preventive coverage would remain unchanged. Individual policy changes would range from a 9% decrease to a 54.4% increase.

Lemonade is also updating territory, age, gender, deductible, coinsurance, annual limit, and veterinary visit fee factors. Rating factors for dogs over nine would increase by 16.5%, while those for cats over nine would rise by 9.4% at renewal. Annual installment fees would increase from $24 to $36.

The insurer reported a 69.6% incurred loss ratio for its Florida pet business between 2023 and 2025. It calculated an indicated overall rate increase of 23.3% but selected 19.5%.

The changes are proposed to take effect on November 18, 2026, for new business and January 2, 2027, for renewals. The filing, submitted July 17, remains under review.

Bottom Line: The size of Metlife’s pet book in Florida.
