Lemonade Gets Alabama Renters Approval on Metromile Paper

Metromile Insurance Company, the Lemonade subsidiary acquired in 2022, has received approval for its first renters insurance program in Alabama. Called “Renters Remix,” the program was submitted September 28 and approved the following day, with an October 20 effective date for new business.

The program supports three distribution channels: Lemonade’s website and app, licensed agents appointed by Metromile, and managed multifamily and single-family rental operators. Direct and agency policies receive the same 5% rating credit.

Pricing varies by census tract, claims history, age, household composition and dwelling type. Households with children or dogs pay more, as do customers renting single-family homes.

Discounts include 10% for bundling renters with car or pet insurance, 5% for eligible affinity relationships, and up to 3% for loyalty. All new policies receive a 16.7% good payer discount. Customers who obtain a quote at least five days before coverage begins receive an additional 5% discount, which phases out over subsequent renewals.

Optional coverages include water backup, tenant damage to a landlord’s property, pet damage, bed bugs and earthquake. Water backup pricing varies significantly by floor: $5,000 of coverage costs $10 annually for units on the second floor or higher, compared with $107.80 for first-floor or basement units, or when the floor is unknown.

Bottom Line: The filing puts Lemonade’s Alabama renters program on Metromile paper and provides for agent and rental-operator distribution alongside Lemonade’s app.
