Erie Raises Auto Accident Surcharge Threshold to $2,350

Erie Insurance has introduced a targeted update to its Pennsylvania private passenger auto program, raising the accident surcharge threshold from $2,250 to $2,350.

The change, approved on April 27, 2026, applies to both new and renewal business effective July 1, 2026, and reflects guidance from the Pennsylvania Insurance Department.

The update does not impact overall rates. Instead, it adjusts how accident severity is measured within the claims factor and surcharge rules.

Under the revised structure:

  • At-fault accidents must now exceed $2,350 in combined losses before triggering a surcharge for new business.
  • Renewal thresholds are aligned to the same level for accidents surcharged for the first time on or after July 1, 2026.
  • The claims factor definition was updated accordingly, shifting the “paid loss from” threshold to $2,350.01.

The filing affects zero policyholders from a premium perspective and results in no written premium change, reinforcing that this is a rules-driven adjustment rather than a pricing action.

The move effectively raises the bar for when minor accidents translate into premium penalties, narrowing surcharge applicability without altering base rates.
