Trupanion Continues Pricing Increases for Chewy Customers

Trupanion is continuing to raise prices for customers enrolled in its Chewy pet insurance program, with American Pet Insurance Company filing increases across nine states.

The latest increases range from 10% in Nebraska to 27.4% in Tennessee. Other filings seek increases of 24.2% in Oregon, 22.9% in North Carolina, 20.4% in Georgia, 18.9% in Idaho and New Mexico, 11.3% in Alabama, and 10.2% in Kentucky.

Excluding Alabama, where the filing does not disclose exposure data, the changes affect 4,540 policyholders representing approximately $2.36 million in written premium. They would generate roughly $500,500 in additional annual premium—an aggregate increase of about 21%.

The filings revise base rates and factors tied to geography, breed, age at enrollment, and gender. Trupanion has repeatedly said the Chewy program lacks enough credible experience to support pricing independently, leading it to supplement the results with experience from its broader pet insurance business. Rising veterinary costs and claim trends are also driving the increases.

This is becoming an annual repricing cycle in some markets. Idaho customers received a 20% increase in November 2025 and now face another 18.9%, producing a compounded increase of approximately 43%. In New Mexico, the latest 18.9% increase follows a 15.4% increase last year, for a compounded increase of about 37%.

The new rates take effect between November 2026 and February 2027, depending on the state and regulatory outcome.
