American Pet Insurance Company is increasing rates for its Trupanion for Chewy Health pet insurance program in New Mexico by 18.9% overall.
The filing affects 199 policyholders representing approximately $92,900 in written premium and would generate about $17,600 in additional premium. Individual policy changes range from increases of 5.6% to 34.8%.
The increase varies by product. Trupanion is seeking a 14.8% increase for its Accident Only plan and 19.2% for its Accident & Illness plans. The company is revising base rates as well as geographic, breed, age-at-enrollment and gender factors.
Trupanion said the Chewy program does not yet have enough credible experience to independently support a rate indication, so it incorporated trends from its broader Trupanion Pet Health Insurance business. The filing assumes annual loss trends of 8.9% for Accident Only and 13.7% for Accident & Illness.
The filing also provides a closer look at the Chewy product. It offers Complete and Essential accident-and-illness plans, an Accident Only plan and wellness options. Depending on the plan, customers can select coinsurance ranging from 50% to 100%, deductibles as high as $5,000 and annual limits of up to $100,000 or no limit. The product also includes Chewy’s Connect with a Vet service, while wellness coverage can be purchased separately.
Despite the proposed increase, Trupanion states that premiums do not change because an individual pet gets older or because of the pet’s own claims experience.
The latest filing follows a 15.4% increase that took effect in November 2025. The new rates are effective November 1, 2026, for new and renewal business.
In New Mexico, Trupanion for Chewy Health grew from 150 policies in July 2025 to 199 policies in August 2026, representing annualized growth of about 30%. That said, it’s still a very small book—only 49 net policies added over roughly 13 months.
