Trupanion for Chewy Raises Rates in South Dakota

American Pet Insurance Company, the underwriting subsidiary of Trupanion, received approval for an 8.1% rate increase for its Trupanion for Chewy Health pet insurance program in South Dakota.

The filing impacts 125 policyholders representing approximately $51,000 in written premium and is effective November 1, 2026, for new and renewal business. Individual policy changes range from a 9.5% decrease to a 31.4% increase.

The insurer is revising base rates along with geographic, breed, age-at-enrollment and gender factors. For the Accident & Illness plans, several of the new factors are being adopted from Trupanion’s own pet health insurance program. The company said the Chewy program doesn’t have sufficiently credible experience to independently support its rate indication, so it incorporated experience from the broader Trupanion program.

For Accident Only coverage, aggregate monthly premium increases from $17.88 to $19.33. For the Essential Accident & Illness plan, it rises from $47.33 to $51.17, while the Complete plan moves from $43.76 to $47.30. Each represents an aggregate increase of 8.1%.

Most customers will see relatively modest dollar increases: 88% of policyholders are projected to pay between $0 and $10 more per month, while 6.4% will receive a decrease.

This follows a 7.6% rate increase that took effect in South Dakota on November 1, 2025.

The filing was submitted and approved on August 5.

Bottom Line: The South Dakota book has grown from 73 policies and $27,660 in premium as of June 2025 to 125 policies and $51,311 in premium, representing increases of 71% and 86%, respectively.
