Ohio Approves THREE Program Filing

Berkshire Hathaway Direct Insurance Company’s THREE program—a simplified commercial insurance product—has been approved in Ohio, with the filing submitted on March 18, 2025, and approved on May 6, 2025, for an effective date of June 1, 2025. Unlike traditional commercial policies that span hundreds of pages, the THREE program combines property, auto, general liability, professional liability, cyber, and more into a three-page, plain-English document. Designed as a streamlined alternative for small businesses, the product has already been approved in over 25 states.

In Ohio, regulatory approval came after several required modifications. The Ohio Department of Insurance capped schedule rating adjustments at 25% in line with OAC 3901-1-22(F), and the company removed coverage eligibility for 1–4 family homes due to Ohio’s mine subsidence laws. References to commercial auto terrorism coverage were stripped to comply with TRIA. Berkshire Hathaway also had to provide detailed rate support for all lines—many modeled after CHUBB or biBERK—and include missing rating tables initially omitted from the filing. Additionally, the crime indices used for rating are sourced from Cotality (formerly CoreLogic) and updated annually at the census block level.
