Nationwide Tightens Driver Eligibility Rules in Connecticut Auto Guidelines

Nationwide Insurance Company of America has filed revisions to its Corporate Auto Underwriting Guidelines for the Private Passenger Auto program in Connecticut, with requested effective dates of November 7, 2025, for both new and renewal business (noted in the filing as 2026). The filing updates driver eligibility criteria used during renewal evaluations.

The revisions adjust thresholds for accident and violation combinations, limiting not-at-fault accidents to two or fewer per driver—whereas three or more previously triggered underwriting review. Additional clarifications address combinations of at-fault accidents and minor violations. Applicants must still receive an eligible underwriting placement value through Nationwide’s internal system, and agents are responsible for confirming that all eligibility standards are met before binding coverage.

The filing includes a compliance questionnaire confirming that artificial intelligence or machine learning is not used for risk selection, tiering, or rating. Nationwide also reaffirmed its policy to automatically suspend binding authority during periods of impending catastrophic events.

This filing carries no rate impact and serves as an update to previous filing number NWPP-134183326. Proof of continuous insurance coverage for the preceding 12 months remains a condition of eligibility.
