Nationwide Removes High Down Payment Requirement For Alabama Auto Policies

Nationwide Insurance Company of America received approval for a rule change that eliminates the 75% down payment requirement for new private passenger auto policies in Alabama. The change takes effect March 20, 2026.

Under the updated rules, new customers will no longer be required to pay most of the policy premium upfront to start coverage. Instead, policies may be issued with standard payment options, including installment plans.

The filing was submitted on February 16 and approved on February 17. The change applies to new business only and reflects a billing flexibility update rather than a rate change.
