Lemonade Adds Separate Pricing for Autonomous Driving in Illinois

Lemonade has filed an Illinois auto insurance update introducing separate premium calculations for autonomous driving, human driving and periods when a vehicle is not being driven.

The filing was marked filed on October 19, with effective dates of November 2, 2026, for new business and December 2 for renewals.

The update adds an Autonomous Mileage Tier and corresponding rating factors, alongside a Car Telematics Group and mileage bands. Regulatory correspondence identifies autonomous mileage tiers labeled A–R and telematics groups numbered 1–130. It also references both pay-per-mile and unlimited telematics programs.

The structure signals a more granular approach to pricing: distinguishing how a vehicle is driven, rather than relying solely on total mileage and driver behavior. However, the supplied documents do not disclose the autonomous-driving factors, potential savings or qualifying vehicles and systems.

Illinois regulators requested additional information to understand how the components translate into a customer’s premium, including complete manuals, the calculation mapping telematics model output to rating groups, and examples comparing the pay-per-mile and unlimited programs.

“The Il-DOI needs to be able to recreate a consumers rate from their risk characteristics,” the department wrote in its October 1 objection letter.

Lemonade submitted its response and complete manuals on October 7. An October 16 amendment added the paid-in-full discount to the non-driving, human-driving and autonomous-driving calculations and revised the program rate adjustment factor.

For competitors, the key development is the explicit separation of human and autonomous driving within Lemonade’s pricing framework. The available filing does not establish how much that distinction will change premiums.
