American Bankers Files Homeowners Rate Increase in Virginia

American Bankers Insurance Company of Florida has filed for a homeowners insurance rate and rule revision in Virginia. The filing, certified on September 15, 2025, affects 9,659 in-force policies, with new business effective January 1, 2026, and renewals effective March 1, 2026. It represents a total premium increase of $1.24 million on in-force premiums of $15.5 million.

The company is requesting an overall 8% rate increase for its HO3 program. Changes include new rating variables—such as number of bathrooms, number of stories, and roof attached structure—alongside base rate increases of 1.5% across all perils, including fire, hurricane, and wind/hail. The proposed adjustments are regionally segmented, with the steepest increase of 14.4% in coastal areas, compared to 5.6% along the I-95 corridor and 6.4% inland.

ABIC noted that its Virginia homeowners program has limited internal credibility for long-term trending, prompting reliance on competitor filings, external data sources, and catastrophe modeling through AIR. The company cited distortion from two large inland losses, valued at $544,000 and $221,000, as a driver of its indicated need in that region.

The filing follows a 12% rate increase implemented in August 2024.
