Travelers Introduces Water Damage Deductible Option

Travelers has introduced a new optional deductible structure for water-related losses as part of its commercial package policy in South Dakota, signaling a continued push to segment property risk more granularly.

The filing, submitted on March 27, 2026 and approved the same day, applies to the Travelers Package Policy and becomes effective November 15, 2026 for new business and January 10, 2027 for renewals.

At the center of the update is a new endorsement that introduces a separate deductible specifically for water damage and freezing-related losses. The endorsement applies to losses caused by water damage or the accidental discharge or leakage of water resulting from frozen pipes or sprinkler systems. Coverage only applies once losses exceed the specified deductible, after which Travelers pays up to policy limits.

The change is paired with new rating rules and deductible factors, allowing pricing to vary based on selected deductible levels and property characteristics. Deductible options range widely, with higher deductibles tied to lower rating factors, effectively giving insureds more control over premium levels in exchange for assuming greater risk.

The move reflects a broader industry trend of isolating water damage as a distinct risk driver, particularly as claims tied to freezing events and plumbing failures continue to pressure loss ratios. By introducing a dedicated deductible and corresponding rating framework, Travelers is aligning pricing more closely with exposure while offering flexibility to policyholders.

From a strategy standpoint, this positions Travelers to better manage frequency-driven property losses without broadly increasing base rates, instead shifting toward risk-based customization at the coverage level.
