Nationwide Insurance Company of America tightened underwriting in Florida to target low-risk drivers, shifting higher-risk applicants to another entity. Despite data supporting a 21.6% rate hike, it only raised rates by 0.1% due to prior improvements.
The company also transitioned to a new system (Policy Center), introduced SmartRide telematics and New Car Replacement Plus, updated discounts—including increasing the accident-free discount to 29%—and added a 5% paperless option. It dropped 12-month policies, capped each policy at nine vehicles, moved classic auto business to Hagerty, and revamped pricing with a new GLM model and smoothing techniques.
