Great American is introducing a new personal watercraft insurance program, with initial filings submitted in Michigan, Tennessee, and Washington.

The program is designed for pleasure-use watercraft and offers physical damage and liability coverage. Great American said the rates were developed using comparable business written by Markel and Chubb, supplemented by judgment reflecting the watercraft’s unique exposures.

Pricing considers factors including hull value, vessel type and age, engine configuration, horsepower, speed, navigation area, operator age, driving record, prior claims, ownership experience, and whether the vessel is trailered. Available protection and indemnity limits extend to $3 million.

Optional features include coverage for limited charter activity, paid captains and crew, fishing tournaments, promotional boats, personal effects, and vessels laid up afloat or ashore. A VIP endorsement for newly sold vessels adds total-loss replacement, a disappearing deductible, tournament fee recovery, and unlimited commercial towing.

The limited charter endorsement costs $500. Crew coverage is priced at $200 per crew member for one-time exposure and $475 for full-time exposure, while fishing tournament coverage carries no additional premium.

Other pricing features include discounts of up to 60% based on the number of months a vessel is laid up and a 5% credit for certain maritime licenses. Operators with multiple recent claims or vessels with four engines appear effectively ineligible based on the filed rating factors.

The filings were submitted on August 17, with a requested effective date of November 1, 2026. They remain pending.
