Great American Files Sports and Wellness Liability Program in New Jersey

Great American filed a new liability insurance program for sports and wellness organizations in New Jersey, marking the carrier’s entry into a segment previously written by Vantapro.

The filing, submitted on June 18, 2026, introduces rates and rules for a commercial general liability program covering a wide range of sports, fitness, recreational, and wellness risks. The program is scheduled to take effect on December 1, 2026.

According to the filing, the Sports and Wellness Program is designed for organizations ranging from fitness centers, yoga studios, sports leagues, camps, swim schools, and youth development programs to higher-hazard activities such as gymnastics, hockey, martial arts, equestrian operations, mountain climbing, paintball, and tackle football. Risks are divided into five hazard groups, with rates varying based on the activity and participant counts.

Great American said the filing supports its assumption of an existing book of business and is based on five years of countrywide premium and loss data provided by the managing general agency. The company’s actuarial review found the book to be materially underpriced, producing an indicated rate need of 125.7%.

As a result, Great American is introducing a revised rating structure that includes higher participant-based rates, changes to camp and event pricing, adjustments to retail store and inflatable exposures, increased charges for higher limits on rented premises coverage, and a higher premium for hired and non-owned auto liability coverage. The filing also reduces the medical expense limit from $25,000 to $10,000.

The company estimates the combined effect of the proposed changes would increase the program’s rating structure by 52.3%. Because the business is new to Great American and there are currently no in-force policyholders, the company said the changes will not have a direct impact on existing insureds.

The program will be written through four Great American carriers: Great American Alliance Insurance Company, Great American Assurance Company, Great American Insurance Company, and Great American Insurance Company of New York.
