Farmers Unit Tightens Texas Home Underwriting

Economy Preferred Insurance Company, part of the Farmers, has updated underwriting guidelines for its Texas homeowners program, tightening eligibility while expanding capacity for higher-value homes.

Filed January 13, 2026, the changes take effect January 16 for new business and February 20 for renewals. The key shift raises the maximum Coverage A limit from $1 million to $1.5 million, signaling a move upmarket. The guidelines also update regional wind and hail deductible requirements to better manage catastrophe exposure.

EPIC continues to rely on third-party risk models, including USDA wildfire data, RMS SCS, and IBHS certifications, and maintains strict ineligibility rules for certain property conditions, uses, and dog bite histories.

Distribution is limited to brokers with systems capable of supporting multiple policy platforms, and roof age restrictions remain a central underwriting control in high-risk Texas regions.
