American Family Shifts Maryland Auto Business To Midvale

American Family Connect is updating its private passenger auto program in Maryland, signaling a halt to new business under the current structure.

The filing was submitted on April 2, 2026, and is currently under review, with a targeted effective date of May 2, 2026 for both new business and renewals.

At the core of the update is a rule change stating that the company will no longer write new business through this program as of the effective date. The revision is reflected directly in the rule manual, which now excludes new policies from eligibility while maintaining the framework for existing risks.

The change is tied to a broader internal transition within the American Family group, with new business being redirected away from American Family Connect and into another underwriting entity, Midvale Indemnity Company, which is introducing a new Maryland auto rating plan effective the same date.

Costco auto policies are underwritten by American Family Connect Property and Casualty Insurance Company, American Family Connect Insurance Company, or Midvale Indemnity Company.

Bottom Line: American Family Connect is effectively closing this Maryland auto program to new customers as business shifts within the group, while existing policies continue under the current framework.
