American Family Seeks Auto Rate Hike in Oregon

Midvale Indemnity, part of American Family, has filed a private auto rate revision in Oregon, seeking an overall 3% increase. The filing was submitted on January 12, 2026, with proposed effective dates of February 18, 2026 for new business and March 20, 2026 for renewals.

The change would affect 2,816 in-force policies representing $3.23 million in written premium.

A central feature of the filing is the introduction of a time-elapsed “refinement factor” into the rating algorithm. Midvale says the adjustment is designed to stabilize performance by incorporating rating factors observed in more tenured sister companies and competitors, including Safeco and American Family Connect.

From a distribution standpoint, the filing highlights a Channel Factor that targets an 8% premium reduction for direct-bound business compared to agency-bound policies. Allstate.com is cited as an example of the direct channel framework informing this approach.

Additional changes include updates to the Steer into Savings and Violation Free discounts. The last rate action for the program was a 10% increase that took effect in May 2025.
