Safeco Insurance Company of Illinois is introducing a targeted auto insurance discount in Wisconsin for existing policyholders who add a newly licensed driver aged 18 or younger.
The insurer said the change is intended to reduce the immediate premium shock experienced when a young driver is added to an existing policy. Drivers with one year of licensing experience will receive a 10% credit, while those with two years of experience will receive a 5% credit.
The change applies across bodily injury, property damage, medical payments, uninsured and underinsured motorist, collision, comprehensive and loss-of-use coverages.
Safeco estimates an overall rate decrease of 0.4%, representing approximately $79,842 in savings across 7,386 policyholders and $18.3 million in written premium. Individual policy decreases could reach 9.9%.
The change will take effect for renewals on October 31, 2026. Safeco last implemented a 2% auto rate increase in Wisconsin in May.
