Safeco Insurance Company of America, a Liberty Mutual Group carrier, has filed a homeowners rate update in New Mexico citing continued weather driven loss pressure. The filing was submitted on December 24, 2025, with renewal business effective March 12, 2026.
The company is requesting an overall rate impact of 3%, based on a state specific actuarial indication of 10.1%. Safeco reported 7,487 affected policyholders and total program premium of roughly $26.2 million, with an estimated written premium increase of about $784,500.
Loss experience continues to be driven by severe weather. The filing includes a high provision for tornado, hail, and severe storm wind losses, which together account for 38.3% of modeled loss costs. Safeco relied on industry calendar year trend data, using regression analysis and the parallelogram method to project premium and loss trends.
The filing follows a significant prior increase. Safeco last implemented a 30.3% homeowners rate hike in New Mexico effective April 16, 2024.
