Root Updates Auto Underwriting Guidelines in Texas

Root has filed updated underwriting guidelines for its private passenger auto program in Texas, underwritten by Redpoint County Mutual Insurance Company.

Under the revised criteria, vehicles valued above $150,000, vehicles manufactured before 1981 and policies containing more than 10 vehicles are ineligible. Root also excludes vehicles used for ridesharing, delivery services, peer-to-peer car sharing or other commercial purposes.

For new business, applicants must meet a minimum telematics score of 2. Test drives completed after policy issuance require a minimum score of 8 and may result in underwriting action.

At renewal, Root may review policies with a claim or at least three policy changes during one term. Policies may also become ineligible based on combinations of at-fault accidents, speeding violations, DUI convictions and other serious driving offenses.

The filing was submitted July 15 with a requested effective date of July 16, 2026, for new and renewal business.
