Root is introducing new customer notices explaining when telematics data results in a premium discount or surcharge.
The filing follows a request from the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation, which said customers must receive written notification during every policy term in which telematics influences their premium. The communication must explain whether telematics was used, whose driving data was considered and whether it increased or reduced the premium.
Root’s new notices state that pricing may consider location, hard braking, mileage, time of day, route regularity, distracted driving, speeding, hard turns and erratic driving patterns. The notices will separately inform policyholders whether the telematics calculation produced a discount or surcharge.
The insurer previously told regulators that it had not anticipated the operational capacity needed to introduce the communications and requested permission to address the requirement through a follow-up filing.
