Root Overhauls Virginia Auto Rating Plan

Root Insurance is overhauling its private passenger auto rating plan in Virginia without changing its overall rate level.

The insurer is introducing rating factors for annualized mileage, connectivity, prior Root claims, endorsement activity and excess vehicle age. It is also removing or consolidating factors tied to homeownership, prior insurance, prior bodily injury limits, safe-driver status and vehicle age.

Root is updating its usage-based insurance models, revising dozens of existing factors and adding further segmentation to towing and labor coverage. The filing also introduces an original equipment manufacturer parts endorsement.

Although the overall rate impact is neutral, individual policy changes could range from a 51% decrease to a 143.3% increase. The program covers 8,707 policyholders and approximately $26.9 million in written premium.

Root requested effective dates of July 31, 2026, for new business and September 15, 2026, for renewals.
