Liberty Mutual To Retire State Auto Commercial Lines Brand

Liberty Mutual has filed notice with Maryland regulators of its intent to withdraw commercial lines business written under the State Auto companies and migrate that business to Liberty Mutual-branded insurers.

The filing, submitted on June 24, 2026, requests an effective date of July 15, 2026, and applies to six insurers within the Liberty Mutual group:

  • Meridian Security Insurance Company
  • Milbank Insurance Company
  • State Auto Property & Casualty Insurance Company
  • State Automobile Mutual Insurance Company
  • Plaza Insurance Company
  • American Compensation Insurance Company

In its filing, Liberty Mutual said it “serves as our notification to the Department of our intent to withdraw from State Auto and migrate business to Liberty Mutual for Commercial Lines.”

The move is the latest step in Liberty Mutual’s integration of State Auto, which it acquired in March 2022 for approximately $1 billion. The acquisition added $2.3 billion in premium and expanded Liberty Mutual’s presence in the independent agency channel.

The filing follows Liberty Mutual’s broader brand consolidation efforts. In April, the company retired the Safeco brand, bringing all personal lines products under the Liberty Mutual name while maintaining separate product offerings for its direct and independent agent channels.
