Farmers Direct Cuts Montana Auto Rates Despite Indicated Increase

Farmers Direct Property and Casualty Insurance Company has filed a 5.1% overall rate decrease for its Montana A360 personal auto program, citing competitive pressure despite an actuarially indicated increase of 3.6%.

The change affects 466 policyholders and approximately $2 million in written premium. Individual decreases range from 4.5% to 10%, with an expected premium reduction of $100,282.

Montana regulators questioned how the company would avoid inadequate rates by cutting prices when its analysis supported an increase. Farmers Direct pointed to the small book and market conditions, including a 7.1% Travelers rate decrease effective August 27, 2026. The company said it would continue monitoring the program.

The filing was marked “Rates Reviewed and Filed” on October 23. Requested effective dates are November 27, 2026, for new business and January 22, 2027, for renewals.
