Trisura has introduced updates to its pet health insurance program in New Mexico, tied to the Odie pet insurance offering, including a significant rate increase and revisions to underwriting factors.
The filing, submitted on March 30, 2026, requests an overall rate increase of 45.9%, impacting 104 policyholders and approximately $53,000 in written premium, with changes effective May 1, 2026 for both new and renewal business.
The move follows a higher indicated need of 56.4%, suggesting Trisura is partially tempering rate pressure while still responding to deteriorating loss experience.
At the program level, base rates are increasing by 40%, reflecting elevated veterinary costs and claims trends. Age factors are being revised upward for younger pets, with increases of 15% for pets under one year and smaller adjustments for ages one and two to stabilize renewal pricing. Breed classifications are also being updated, including changes to mixed breed dogs and domestic shorthair cats, indicating a recalibration of risk segmentation.
The rating framework remains highly factor-driven, combining base rates with trend, geography, breed, age, deductible, and coverage selections to determine premiums.
Coverage continues to offer flexibility across coinsurance levels, deductibles, and annual limits, alongside optional wellness and supplemental benefits. Discounts, capped at 12%, are available for military, multi-pet households, and partner channels.
