Palomar Introduces Crop Hail Program in Maryland

Palomar is entering the crop insurance market in Maryland with a crop hail product, expanding beyond its catastrophe-focused portfolio. The program is structured as a private, non-federally reinsured offering, meaning the company retains the risk rather than relying on federal backstops, and it will be distributed through Palomar Crop Insurance Services using NCIS-based forms alongside proprietary endorsements.

The product centers on hail damage but is designed with flexibility in how coverage is packaged. Farmers can choose single-season policies, continuous coverage that aligns with federal crop insurance programs, or bundled options that integrate with MPCI. The inclusion of built-in discounts for combining coverages points to a strategy focused on increasing premium per customer through product attachment rather than competing on price alone.

As background, Palomar acquired Advanced AgProtection last year as part of its expansion into crop insurance. The Texas-headquartered MGA had been a partner since 2023, when Palomar made a strategic investment at the launch of their relationship.
