IAIC Updates Hawaii Pet Program

Independence American Insurance Company (IAIC) has filed updates to its IAIC Version 4 Model Law-F&R pet insurance program in Hawaii, affecting 3,725 policyholders and $2.37 million in written premium. The filing, submitted June 10, 2025, includes form, rate, and rule revisions and proposes a modest 0.795% overall rate increase, following a 12.61% hike that takes effect August 1.

Notable changes include the removal of the 14-day accident waiting period and a reclassification of knee and ligament conditions as illnesses under accident-only policies. The program is structured across distribution channels including PTZ, Pumpkin, and Spot, with the latter exempt from certain transition rules.

The revised rates are scheduled to take effect January 1, 2026, for new and renewal business. IAIC continues to offer a range of discounts—such as 10% for multiple pets, 15% for large employer or affinity groups, and 15% for military and first responders—while capping combined discounts (excluding the multi-pet discount) at 20%. Additional fees include a $15 enrollment charge (with some exceptions) and a $2 installment fee, which is waived for annual payments.

The filing is designed to comply with the Pet Insurance Act and includes updated policy terms and conditions, including a 30-day free look period and 60-day advance notice for non-renewals.
