Direct General Trims Florida Car Insurance Rates

Direct General, the nonstandard auto insurer owned by National General, has filed for a 6.23% decrease in its Florida private passenger auto program and a 4.20% increase in its RV program. The changes are effective May 21, 2026, for new business and June 26, 2026, for renewals.

The filing revises base rates and expense load factors across the programs. According to the filing memorandum, the rate changes were driven by a review of company experience and claims data.

Direct General’s Florida auto business has expanded significantly in recent years. The company’s private passenger auto direct written premium in the state increased from approximately $715 million in 2022 to nearly $1.14 billion in 2024, representing growth of about 60% over the two-year period.
