Florida Auto: Direct General –8%, Safeco –4%, Progressive Eases Rules

Several auto insurers submitted updates to Florida regulators on February 27, 2026, reflecting a mix of rate reductions and underwriting changes.

Direct General Lowers Rates 8%

Direct General Insurance Company, part of Allstate, filed revisions to its Private Passenger Auto RAD7Value program, resulting in an overall rate decrease of 8%. The update includes changes to base rates, expense loads, model year factors, territory factors, and symbol assignments, signaling continued recalibration of pricing segmentation in Florida. The company’s Florida auto book exceeds $156 million in written premium.

Safeco Cuts Rates 4%

Safeco Insurance Company of Illinois filed a rate revision to its Florida private passenger auto program with an overall impact of –4%. The book generates more than $155 million in premium and reflects roughly 55,000 earned vehicle-years of exposure. The filing updates base rates, fixed expenses, and model year factors as part of a broader model refresh aligned with recent loss trends and vehicle characteristics.

Progressive Expands Acceptance Criteria

Progressive filed a rule change to its Unacceptable Policies provision in Florida, removing a prior restriction that made policies ineligible if a single car had three or more not-at-fault or comprehensive claims within 36 months. A parallel filing from Progressive Select Insurance Company implements the same update. The move reflects a modest expansion of underwriting appetite rather than a pricing change.
