CMT’s Updated Telematics Scoring Model Approved in South Dakota

Cambridge Mobile Telematics (CMT) received approval in South Dakota for PL Premium Score v1.2, an updated version of its DriveWell telematics scoring model for personal auto insurers. The filing, approved on June 5, 2026, allows insurers using DriveWell to apply telematics-based discounts or surcharges based on driving behavior captured through a smartphone app. The updated model takes effect on June 22, 2026, for both new and renewal business.

Under the program, at least one named insured must enroll in DriveWell and download the mobile application. After an observation period of at least 91 days, drivers receive a score that corresponds to a rating factor applied to certain coverages, including bodily injury and property damage liability, medical payments, personal injury protection, and collision coverage. The resulting adjustment remains in effect for at least one policy period.

According to the filing, CMT’s previous Premium Score v1.1 model was approved in 2022, and the company’s telematics scoring programs have now been approved by 49 insurance departments across 48 states and the District of Columbia. CMT noted that the new filing does not replace earlier approvals and continues to rely on proprietary algorithms that the company says are protected by patents and trade secrets.
