Old Republic Insurance Company has launched a new Pet Wellness Insurance Plan in California, separate from its existing injury and illness coverage. Approved on April 18, 2025, the program focuses exclusively on routine and preventive care, with projected annual premium reaching $629,700 across 2,500 exposure units.
The rates are modeled after Safeco’s approved wellness plan, adjusted for loss ratio differences and trended using veterinary CPI data. Companion Protect Agency, LLC serves as the program’s MGA, and Perr & Knight submitted the filing on ORIC’s behalf. While the filing includes no initial policyholders, all dogs and cats are eligible, and the product is recognized under California insurance law.
Notable regulatory elements include a mandatory arbitration endorsement, a California-specific amendatory endorsement, and an insurer disclosure form outlining key policy provisions. A previously proposed group discount tied to Progressive was removed due to rebate concerns. The program carries no monthly installment fee and applies nationwide, including D.C.
