Old Republic Insurance Company has introduced a new Pet Wellness Insurance Program in Massachusetts, focused exclusively on preventive and routine care—not accident or illness coverage. The program, effective April 7, 2025, marks a clean launch with no existing policyholders or premium.
The filing pulls base rates and plan structures from Safeco’s previously approved nationwide wellness plan, adjusting for differences in permissible loss ratios and applying a 9% annual trend based on veterinary service CPI data. Covered services include dental cleanings, physical exams, lab testing, de-worming, vaccinations, and flea/tick preventatives.
Filed by Perr & Knight and using forms owned by Companion Protect LLC, the program includes a 15% combined discount cap (excluding multi-pet discounts) and offers refunds for early cancellations. Under Massachusetts law, pet health insurance is classified as livestock insurance. No rate increase was proposed, as this is a new program.
