Nationwide has filed a notice in South Dakota to discontinue the sale of new travel insurance policies written by the company and distributed through its Nationwide Specialty Insurance (NSI) channel.
The filing, approved by the South Dakota Division of Insurance on January 15, 2026, formally ends new business under the NSI travel program effective April 15, 2026. The discontinuation follows a strategic review of Nationwide’s business portfolio and applies only to the NSI distribution channel, not to other Nationwide operations that currently sell or may sell travel insurance in the future.
Nationwide told regulators that while many NSI distribution partners will stop writing new travel policies at the beginning of 2026, some partners will be allowed additional transition time to avoid customer disruption. Those partners may continue issuing new policies through 2026, with a target date of December 31, 2026 for a complete stop to new sales. New business is expected to taper off significantly in the first half of the year.
The company stated it will continue to honor all existing and newly issued policies through their natural expiration dates and does not anticipate issuing non renewals or cancellations as a result of the change. Nationwide also indicated there will be no direct impact to policyholders or premium levels, though customer requested cancellations or transfers to other carriers or brokers will be accommodated.
The filing is classified as a discontinuance or cessation of marketing for inland marine travel coverage and does not involve any rate changes.
A similar filing was submitted in Wyoming.
