State National, which underwrites Tesla Insurance policies in California, is overhauling the program’s rating plan without changing its overall rate level.
The filing introduces a 20% electric-vehicle discount across major coverages and a uniform 10% multi-vehicle discount. It also revises factors tied to driving history, annual mileage, years of driving experience, claims frequency and severity, vehicle symbols and ZIP code.
Despite the neutral overall impact, individual premiums could decrease by as much as 73% or increase by as much as 204.4%. Approximately 66% of premium would receive a decrease.
Tesla is also changing several coverage options. Customers with $300,000 in property-damage coverage will be moved to $100,000 at renewal, while customers with medical-payments limits ranging from $5,000 to $50,000 will be moved to a $1,000 limit. A rental-reimbursement option of $125 per day/$3,750 total will be replaced by a $100/$3,000 option.
The program covers 66,313 policyholders and approximately $91.4 million in written premium. State National last increased rates by 12.4%, effective August 11, 2025. Also, the data is heavily weighted toward single-vehicle policies.
State National is in the process of transferring policies to Tesla Insurance Company. Tesla said the two programs use the same underwriting and claims practices, and their combined experience was used to support the filing.
The filing was submitted on July 24 with a requested effective date of November 1, 2026, for new and renewal business.
