Root Files Premium Assistance Program in Kansas

Root is seeking approval for a Kansas auto insurance endorsement that would allow third parties to pay some or all of a policyholder’s premium.

In a filing submitted November 2, Root said an unnamed “top 5 vehicle manufacturer” requested its assistance in bringing the program to Kansas. The filing does not identify the automaker or disclose assistance amounts, eligibility criteria or how long the benefit would last.

Root says policies would be issued at its fully filed and approved rates and underwritten using its standard guidelines. The assistance would come from an independent third party, rather than an insurance discount or rebate.

Under the proposed endorsement, participating sponsors could cover all or part of the premium, subject to program limits. Policyholders would be responsible for amounts above those limits, including additional premiums resulting from policy changes, unless the program’s terms provide otherwise.

If a policy is canceled or its premium is reduced, any unused premium paid by a sponsor would be returned to that sponsor. Policyholders would receive refunds only for unearned premium they paid themselves.

The endorsement also allows optional promotional benefits, including goods, services, memberships, rewards and gift cards. These benefits would not constitute insurance coverage.

Root says the form has already been approved in Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

The company requested a January 5, 2027 effective date for new and renewal business in Kansas. The filing was listed as assigned, with no approval recorded in the documents reviewed.
