Permanent General Assurance Corporation and Permanent General Assurance Corporation of Ohio, insurers doing business as The General, will stop writing new private-passenger auto policies in Florida on September 16, 2026.
A filing with the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation says the change applies only to new business. Both insurers will continue servicing and renewing their existing Florida policies under approved rates, rules and forms.
The companies are revising their Florida 3.9 and IA Auto 1.0 programs to remove references to new-business effective dates. The rule changes take effect September 16 for new business and November 17, 2026, for renewals.
A separate filing shows Peak Property and Casualty Insurance Corporation will replace Dairyland with The General branding in Florida, effective September 16 for new business. Its product remains open to new policies.
We reached out to Sentry, which said the changes are part of a strategy to optimize its portfolio ahead of broader expansion in Florida and nationwide:
“When we acquired The General, our goal was to expand across multiple channels by leaning into an already highly recognized, trusted brand. Our long-term strategy is built on modern technology, strong agent relationships, and well-developed direct-to-consumer capabilities. These efforts represent our first proactive steps toward optimizing our portfolio as we prepare for broader expansion in Florida and countrywide.”
