Benchmark Insurance Company filed revisions to its Coterie businessowners program in Hawaii, proposing an average rate increase of 10.3% across 70 policies. Requested effective dates are January 1, 2027, for new business and April 1, 2027, for renewals. The filing is pending.
The changes include updated ISO loss costs, a $600 minimum premium for policies with business personal property coverage, a $50 policy fee and a new $10 endorsement/service fee. Liability limits would be capped at $2 million per occurrence and $4 million aggregate.
The filing also introduces a mandatory space weather exclusion covering events such as solar flares and geomagnetic storms. Direct fire damage resulting from those events would remain covered, but the exception would not extend to business income or extra expense losses.
Other changes include coverage enhancement packages for contractors, restaurants and food trucks, an optional named storm exclusion, and an increase in permitted subcontracted work from 10% to 50%, subject to subcontractor insurance conditions.
The program is distributed through Coterie Insurance Agency’s online platform.
Bottom Line: Coterie’s Hawaii BOP book grew from 41 policies in August 2022 to 70 in October 2026—an average net gain of less than one policy per month.
