AAIS Fire Rating Framework Approved in South Carolina and Indiana

The American Association of Insurance Services (AAIS) has received approval from South Carolina and Indiana regulators for homeowners insurers to use FLAMES, its new framework for evaluating local fire protection.

FLAMES—short for Fire Loss Assignment & Mitigation Evaluation Score—combines ZIP code-level modeling of potential fire losses with an assessment of community efforts to prevent and reduce those losses. Insurers adopting the framework can incorporate those efforts into their rating.

The framework has two components: a Fire Loss Assignment that evaluates fire loss potential, and a Mitigation Evaluation Score that assesses local prevention, mitigation, and Community Risk Reduction activities.

South Carolina and Indiana are the first states to approve FLAMES. AAIS said additional filings are under review or in development as it seeks broader availability nationwide.
