SurSafe Looks to Personal Credit to Price Small Businesses

SurSafe is seeking approval to use a business owner’s personal credit information to price businessowners policies in Kansas.

The insurer plans to introduce Verisk’s Inflection credit-based insurance score, which was developed for homeowners insurance. SurSafe said the model will use the personal financial information of a qualifying business owner as a substitute for commercial financial information about the business.

The score would adjust the entire BOP premium by between a 21% surcharge and a 23% discount. Scores between 625 and 649 receive a neutral factor, while applicants with insufficient or unavailable credit information would also receive no adjustment. When multiple owners qualify, their scores would generally be averaged.

SurSafe would obtain a score when a policy is first written and again at the third renewal. Insureds may request rescoring once every 12 months unless they already receive the largest discount.

The proposed rule would apply to new and renewal policies beginning October 1, 2026. SurSafe currently has no Kansas BOP policies in force.
