Progressive Proposes Higher Boat Insurance Rates in Rhode Island

Progressive has filed for a 7.4% overall rate increase for its boat and personal watercraft insurance program in Rhode Island.

The proposal affects 9,080 policyholders across three Progressive insurers, representing approximately $6.1 million in written premium. Individual impacts range from a 0.9% decrease to a 39.6% increase.

The largest proposed increase is for property damage liability coverage, at 51%. Bodily injury liability rates would rise 9%, collision 10%, and comprehensive 0.9%. Rates for uninsured boaters coverage would fall 10%, while medical payments and fishing equipment coverage would each decrease 5%.

The filing changes base rates without revising rating factors or territory definitions. It follows a 22.9% overall increase effective in May 2025.

Submitted October 14, the proposal requests effective dates of February 5, 2027, for new business and March 17, 2027, for renewals. Its status was listed as submitted to the state.
