Metromile Proposes Removing Tesla Restriction in California

Metromile Insurance Company, part of Lemonade, has filed to update its California auto underwriting guidelines, including removing Tesla from its list of unacceptable vehicle makes.

The proposal would also raise the vehicle MSRP ceiling from $99,999 to $150,000 and allow liability-only coverage for vehicles previously declared a total loss or carrying salvage or branded titles. Certain restrictions remain subject to an exception for qualifying California good drivers.

Other changes would tighten driver eligibility. Metromile proposes a six-month continuous insurance requirement and restrictions on applicants or listed drivers whose Metromile policies were canceled or nonrenewed for underwriting reasons within the previous 12 months. Both provisions include the good-driver exception.

The filing also replaces an existing rating-point threshold with specific conviction and accident criteria, adds vehicles used as full-time residences to unacceptable uses, and expands photo-review guidelines. Identified concerns—including existing damage, business use or inadequate photos—could lead to underwriting action, including removal of physical damage coverage.

No changes to rates or rating factors are proposed. Metromile requested January 19, 2027, implementation for new and renewal business. The filing remains pending.
