Hippo Seeks 15.7% Homeowners Rate Increase in Virginia

Spinnaker Insurance, which underwrites Hippo homeowners policies, has filed for a 15.7% overall rate increase in Virginia.

The filing impacts approximately 2,792 policyholders and is expected to generate an additional $726,802 in written premium on a current premium base of about $4.63 million. The company indicated a need for an 18.9% rate increase, while the maximum policy-level increase would be capped at 23%.

The filing, submitted on June 3, 2026, seeks an August 3, 2026 effective date for new business and December 22, 2026 for renewals. It replaces rates previously approved under a 2023 filing.

Hippo is also increasing its inspection fee to $34 from $30, while maintaining its $150 policy fee (vs. competitor Homeowners of America at $195). The inspection fee is waived when the insured submits a qualifying home inspection report completed within the previous 12 months.

The updated rule manual continues to incorporate a broad range of rating variables, including roof condition, tree overhang, roof square footage, roof facet count, vegetation coverage, foundation type, structure density, insurance score, payment history, smart-home water leak detection devices, and HOA membership.

According to the filing, homeowners who bundle an eligible Hippo partnership product receive a 10% multiple-policy discount.
