ARAG is seeking approval to add several optional benefits to its group legal expense insurance product in Virginia.

The proposed endorsements expand coverage to bankruptcy, IRS and state tax audits, building-code disputes, easements, property-tax assessments, zoning matters, school administrative hearings and disputes involving Social Security, veterans, Medicare or Medicaid benefits. Separate property-related benefits would be available for primary and secondary residences.

ARAG also plans to reimburse up to $250 in court filing fees and up to $1,000 in mediation costs per covered event. When insureds use network attorneys, covered legal services are paid in full. Reimbursement limits apply when non-network attorneys are used.

The revised policy introduces a “case confirmation,” which verifies that a legal matter qualifies for coverage and specifies applicable limits and attorney options. Legal work performed without this confirmation may not be covered or reimbursed.

The filing does not replace ARAG’s existing Virginia program. It was submitted July 29 and remains under regulatory review. ARAG requested an effective date of January 1, 2027.
