U.S. Legal Services Introduces College Defender for College Students

U.S. Legal Services of Georgia has filed a new College Defender legal services plan in Georgia, targeting students enrolled at colleges, universities, community colleges, technical schools, and trade schools. The company is seeking an effective date of August 14, 2026.

The individual plan carries a monthly premium of $38.60 or $426.14 annually, reflecting an 8% discount for customers who pay annually.

The product combines traditional prepaid legal services with student-focused benefits. New coverages include preparation of student-related legal documents—such as healthcare powers of attorney, HIPAA authorizations, FERPA waivers, living wills, and durable financial powers of attorney—as well as attorney representation for Title IX (academic/cheating allegations and sexual harassment/assault, bullying, and discrimination) and other college disciplinary investigations, with up to 20 hours of legal assistance.

The plan also includes legal consultations, defense for certain misdemeanor and traffic matters, debt collection and garnishment assistance, identity restoration, financial wellness services, and other civil legal benefits. Most services are provided through attorneys designated by the company.

The filing notes that the Student Specific Documents and Title IX coverages account for roughly two-thirds of the plan’s expected losses and are the primary drivers of pricing, while the remaining benefits leverage experience from the company’s existing Family Defender legal services program.
