TypTap, part of HCI Group, submitted a Rhode Island homeowners rate filing requesting an overall 6% increase effective September 1, 2026.
The filing impacts 3,894 policyholders and about $12.8 million in written premium. TypTap said the filing reflects changes to territory factors and updates tied to expense ratios and loss experience in the state.
TypTap’s indicated rate need was 7.5%, though the company selected a lower 6% increase. The filing follows prior Rhode Island homeowners increases of 9.7% in 2023, 24.5% in 2024, and 11.6% in 2025.
The filing notes that projected non-catastrophe loss and DCCE ratios reached 40.3%, while the projected catastrophe loss and DCCE ratio was 9.8%. Net reinsurance costs remain significant at about 21% of subject premium.
TypTap also tied part of its expense changes to the carve-out of Exzeo Group from HCI Group. The filing describes Exzeo as an affiliated insurance technology company that serves as TypTap’s proprietary technology division.
