Physicians Mutual Expands Pet Insurance Push With Connecticut Filing

Physicians Mutual received approval in Connecticut for a new pet insurance program featuring a broad menu of optional riders and policy features, continuing the insurer’s expansion in the pet insurance market.

The filing, recorded effective on June 12, 2026, introduces a new accident-and-illness pet insurance product and a series of optional endorsements, including office visit and exam fees, alternative care, prescription drugs, rehabilitation and physical therapy, wellness benefits, final respects coverage, and pet parent assistance.

The policy covers cats and dogs and includes a one-day waiting period for accidents and a 14-day waiting period for illnesses. Orthopedic conditions for dogs are subject to a six-month waiting period, although that waiting period can be waived if the pet undergoes an orthopedic examination and a veterinarian submits an orthopedic waiver form.

Among the product’s features is a diminishing deductible benefit. For each claim-free year, the policyholder’s annual deductible is reduced by $50 until it reaches zero. If a claim is paid, the deductible resets to its original level at the next renewal.

The filing also introduces discounts that may be offered to policyholders meeting certain underwriting criteria. The insurer noted that such discounts “may be altered, changed, modified, revised, discontinued, or terminated at any time” with 30 days’ written notice.

The new filing follows Physicians Mutual’s recently approved California pet insurance program launched in partnership with Rainwalk Technology and suggests the company is continuing to build out its pet insurance footprint across additional states.
