Octo Files Commercial Auto Version of DriveAbility 3.0 in North Carolina

Octo Analytics is expanding its telematics offering into the commercial auto market in North Carolina, filing its DriveAbility Score 3.0 program for use in commercial lines effective August 31, 2026. The filing does not introduce a new scoring model but extends the same algorithm previously approved for personal auto business to commercial auto applications.

DriveAbility Score 3.0 is a usage-based insurance (UBI) scoring system that analyzes driving behavior using telematics data collected through participating insurers’ programs. According to Octo, subscribing insurers provide driving and claims data to the company, which hosts and analyzes the information through its DriveAbility database. The resulting score can then be incorporated into insurers’ underwriting and pricing decisions, although individual carriers determine how the score is ultimately applied.

The filing states that DriveAbility Score 3.0 builds on earlier versions introduced in 2011 and 2014, while adding greater flexibility through customizable scoring components. The model can reward behaviors associated with lower risk, including reduced annual mileage, stable driving patterns, and avoiding higher-risk travel periods. Octo noted that both GPS and non-GPS configurations remain available, allowing insurers to transition from earlier versions of the score without significantly changing their telematics frameworks.

Octo also requested trade secret protection for portions of the filing related to the scoring methodology, including rules, relativities, and scoring examples. The company argued that disclosure of the algorithm would harm its competitive position, noting that only approximately 25 individuals have access to the underlying model and that its telematics expertise has been developed over more than a decade.

The filing, submitted on June 10, 2026, lists a requested effective date of August 31, 2026, for both new and renewal commercial auto business in North Carolina.
